Jared Leto’s ‘Morbius’ Makes $39M Domestically In Its First Week, $80M Globally

Jared Leto’s Marvel anti-hero movie ‘Morbius’ takes $39 million at the domestic box office with a global $84 million over its first weekend. The movie made $44.9 million at the international box office boosting its global sales.

The latest movie is an attempt by Sony to bring MCU comic characters to life after the success of the Spider-Man anti-hero movie Venom. However, unlike Venom, Morbius is not a traditional superhero movie as it is more of a dark-action thriller with a vampire.

Since Morbius is not as popular as Spider-Man and Venom, film analysts were not expecting Morbius to break box office records.

Sony spent $75 million on Morbius including production and marketing. It is less than what the studio normally spends on superhero blockbusters. Sony Pictures made almost $1.88 billion at the worldwide box office. Similarly, Venom also made $856 million globally.

Morbius, starring Jerod Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, and Michael Keaton is a story about Dr. Michael Morbius, a well-known biochemist. After trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, Morbius turns into a lethal vampire.

Sony projected $33 million in its first week for the movie. The movie opened on Friday with $17.01 million also including Thursday previews of $5.7 million. It means 33.5% of the revenue came from previews.

The Lost City starring Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock came at No.2 domestically, making $61.16 million worldwide.

Morbius has a decent audience score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. Given the reception and reviews from critics, Morbius will have tough competition as ‘Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (April 8) opens in theatres worldwide soon.
